Glossop SNT - Safer Roads Protecting Lives
Why Do We Enforce Speed Limits? ๐
Many drivers ask why Derbyshire Police focus on speeding. The simple answer is that our priority is protecting lives. Last year, 542 people were killed or seriously injured on Derbyshireโs roads, with almost a third of those collisions linked to excessive speed.
Speeding is one of the "Fatal Five" factors that contribute to serious collisions, alongside: ๐ Not wearing a seatbelt ๐ต Driver distraction, including mobile phone use ๐บ Drink or drug driving ๐ฎ Careless or inconsiderate driving
We know speeding is a major concern for local communities, which is why our Safer Roads Team uses a combination of static cameras, average speed cameras and mobile enforcement to target high-risk locations and areas highlighted by the public.
Where appropriate, drivers caught speeding will be offered a Speed Awareness Course. Education is our preferred option, with 92% of attendees reporting positive changes to their driving behaviour.
Ultimately, we would welcome a time when speed enforcement is no longer necessary. Until then, we remain committed to making the roads of Derby and Derbyshire safer and reducing the number of people killed or seriously injured in road collisions.
